Maker Hub

• Equipment use is available by appointment only due to space limitations.
• Users must be library members and 16 years or older to use the Maker Hub independently. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Note: Some equipment requires certification for use.
• Users must complete the required training, orientation, or certification if there is one for the equipment.
• The library is not responsible for any manufacturing defects in the quality of workmanship or materials inherent in any of the tools or equipment.
• Staff will demonstrate proper usage, or make available upon request, manuals and other instructional material.
• Users must report any accident/incident that occurs in the Maker Hub to a library staff member immediately.
• Users must clean up their workspace and return items to their original location.
• Users accept financial responsibility for any misuse or damage to any equipment.
• Food or drink is not permitted near equipment in the Maker Hub.
• Staff reserve the right to stop any projects that violate library policies or are unsafe and/or unlawful, as well as any failed 3D prints.
• Users may save work on external memory devices. Staff are not responsible for saving user files.
• It is the user’s obligation and responsibility to determine and satisfy copyright, patent,
  trademark and other user restrictions. The library is not responsible for violations of intellectual property laws.
• All users must adhere to the Newmarket Library’s Code of Conduct when in the Maker Hub and in the library. Failure to do so will result in immediate expulsion from the space.
• Violation of any of the above guidelines can result in revocation of the user’s right to access the Maker Hub.

A 3D printer is a machine that creates physical objects from a digital design. It works by building the object layer by layer instead of 
cutting material away. First, a 3D model is prepared on a computer and using slicing software, the design is then converted into a g-code file. The file is then loaded into a 3D printer and printed using materials like PLA, ABS, or PETG to form each layer.  As the layers stack up, a complete 3D object is created.

Steps to Certification:

1. Review the Virtual 3D Printer Certification slideshow
2. Complete the 3D Certification Quiz
3. Submit the  NPL  Maker Hub Agreement form

4. Book a time to visit the Maker Hub to demonstrate your understanding of 3D printers and make your first test print. 

   Once you’ve completed these steps, your library card will be updated with your 3D printer certification, and you’ll be ready to start printing.

How to visit the library to complete 3D printer certification:

1. Please use our reservation system to book a time for your demonstration.
2. Load a new colour into the printer (demonstrates you can use the menu and understand how to change filament spools)
3. Use the menu to print a file in the folder called 3D Printer Certification.
4. Observe the printer printing.
5. Remove your print using a spatula after it has cooled
6. Turn off the printer
7. Remove the brim using the available tools.
8. Staff will update your account so you are fully certified and can use the printer on your own.

Slicing software is used to prepare 3D models for the printer.

Ultimaker Cura is a popular application. Metric (mm) only.

A Cricut Maker is a smart cutting machine. It cuts shapes and designs out of materials, including paper, vinyl, fabric, cardstock and more. Designs are created on a computer or mobile device using a software called Cricut Design Space, and then connected to the Cricut machine, which then cuts the design for you. 

Please bring your own materials for your projects. Some materials are available for purchase.

A heat press uses heat and pressure to permanently apply designs onto a variety of items.
At the Maker Hub, it’s used for customizing T-shirts, mugs, and other blanks with vinyl, infusible ink, or sublimation prints.

You can use a button maker to make pin-back buttons with customized designs. You can make use of the Buttonmakers.net website to create custom designs by choosing the size of the button maker. The website also allows you to upload a .PNG or .JPEG files to use as a button design.

How to make a button design

1. Make your own original design.
2. The design should be the size of the button face (e.g. 1.5") and have a margin (e.g. 0.25") around the edge.
3. You can make a design on a piece of paper, use a template, or use an online website to design it.
4. Bring your printed design to the Maker Hub.
5. Follow the instructions to make your own button.

The Epson SureColor F170 prints your digital design onto special sublimation paper using sublimation ink. Secure the print onto a Sublimation blank (mugs, tumblers, mouse pads, keychains or polyester fabrics) and apply heat with a heat press. The heat bonds the ink into the material, creating vibrant, long-lasting designs. 

• PNG: Best overall (supports transparency and high quality).
• JPEG/JPG: Good for photos (smaller file size, slight quality compression).
• PDF: Great for finalized designs and printing layouts.

An Addi knitting machine is a brand of circular knitting machine made by Addi (a German 
company) that allows you to quickly knit yarn into tubes, panels, hats, scarves, and more. It is much faster than knitting by hand. With this machine, you can do circular knitting and flat panel knitting.

Kodak Slide N SCAN 
This device converts slides and film negatives into digital JPEG files, saving them directly onto an SD card (formatted in FAT32). It can scan slides and film negatives up to 50mm (135) in size.

The Epson FastFoto FF-680W is a high-speed scanner designed for quickly digitizing photos and documents.

This device converts VHS tapes and other analog video sources into digital video files for easy storage and sharing.

Connect devices such as VCRs, camcorders, DVD players, and gaming consoles to capture video directly onto a USB drive or SD card (formatted in FAT32). Your recordings are saved as digital files, making it simple to preserve and access older media.

Anyone with a valid library card and over 16 years of age can use the Maker Hub equipment 
independently. Some equipment may require certification or staff assistance before use.

Yes, some equipment requires a brief orientation or training session before you can use it 
independently. You can book a one-on-one session with staff by making an appointment.

Please book an appointment. You may reserve equipment for independent use once you have completed the required orientation or certification (if applicable). Additionally, the system allows you to schedule a one-on-one session with staff to learn how to operate the equipment.

Our 3D printers require certification.

The following equipment and devices require you to attend an orientation before using the equipment:

complete projects on behalf of users. Assistance is available by appointment only. Please book a one-on-one session in advance to ensure support during your visit. Please note that wait times for appointments may be up to two weeks. 

Most equipment and services are free to use. However, some materials (such as 3D printing 
filament or specialty paper) may incur a small fee. Details are available on this webpage under equipment details or by asking staff.

Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied and supervised by an adult, and they can attend learning sessions with an adult.

No, we don't print for you, but you can get certified to use the printer yourself using the Virtual 3D Printer Certification link on our website.

Complete our Virtual 3D Printer Certification online or attend one of our 3D printer certification programs. Once certified, you can book time to use the printers at the Maker Hub. You may also book a one-on-one session with Maker Hub staff if you need additional tips and tricks.

We only use and allow PLA. PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) is a type of thermoplastic that can be melted at 210 C to create an object. It is biodegradable.

Cost of PLA is $2/metre. The amount of filament depends on the size and density of your print. The slicing process will give you information on the amount of filament and the time it takes to complete the print.

Up to 24 hours maximum. To run a long 3D print, you must start the print job in the morning and check in on it every few hours. These prints must be started either on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday during library open hours. You must come in and check the print at 8:30 p.m. to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Yes, a laptop is available in the Maker Hub. Mention this on your booking form if you’d like to use it during your visit.

Yes, sublimation only works with sublimation ink and sublimation transfer paper.

Yes, it's $2 a sheet (which includes sublimation paper, ink, parchment paper, and thermal tape.

If you bring your own material it will be $1 for the ink.

No, we don't carry adapters for a USB/SD card for use with iPhone/iPad/MacBook.

The quality of scanned photos depends on the original photo. The scanner can enhance images and remove red eyes. The scanner has 3 resolutions: 300 dpi, 600 dpi, and 1,200 dpi.

It depends on how well the reel is kept. If some parts of the reel are faded it cannot be restored. 

Yes, we have an overhead (no-touch) scanner that can convert documents into PDF format. Because it scans from above, there’s no need to press items against a surface like you would with a flatbed scanner.

NewMakeIt has a partnership agreement with Newmarket Public Library where we support each other in programming and events between our two spaces. The Newmakeit makerspace is a non-profit dedicated to helping other entrepreneurs, inventors, makers, and artists achieve their goals cost-effectively.
