Ongoing activities

Chess in the Library

Love playing chess? Or maybe you are new to the game. Join us on Saturdays for the opportunity to play a challenging game with your peers or learn how to play. Chess in the Library at the Newmarket Public Library is a part of the Chess in the Library organization whose mission is to promote chess across Canada through its student volunteer-run program.

When: Every Saturday 2-4pm

Where: Program Room (top floor of the library)

Advanced Readers Book Club

The Advanced Readers Book Club is for children aged eight to twelve years old who are interested in reading challenging books like "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett, or "Swindle" by Gordon Korman. Everyone reads the same book and we meet to discuss and do activities based on the book's theme. Meetings are once a month on Thursdays 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

This is a popular program, so please contact us if interested in joining the Advanced Readers Book Club.

Reading Buddies

A weekly reading support program for children in grades 1 to 4 who are struggling to read at their level. Children are paired with trained and caring volunteer mentors for one hour per week, and each session runs for 8 weeks. Mentors and Buddies also take part in literacy activities in a supportive, pressure-free environment. Registration is ongoing. Please note this program is popular, and there may be a delay between applying and being matched with a partner.

Ages: Grade 1-4

When: September to June
