Supervisor, Programs and Community Engagement

Type of position: Non-union full-time

Posting date: Monday, May 16, 2022

Overview of position: 

Under the direction of the Manager, Library Services, Newmarket Public Library, this position is responsible for the management and implementation of programming, community engagement, outreach and all related social media and marketing initiatives for the Newmarket Public Library. This person is responsible for the development and marketing of Library programming, building relationships with community partners and stakeholders and will foster a strong relationship between the Library and the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. The Supervisor, Programs and Community Engagement participates in the development of overall Library strategies and policies related to partnership development, outreach and community relationship building. 
  2. The successful candidate creates library wide strategies and tools for program evaluation.
  3. Ability to evaluate and anticipate the needs of the community to review and assess programs, outreach, marketing and relationships to determine new programs or implement changes to meet the needs of the public.
  4. Researches, recommends, develops, and implements community partnerships that help the Newmarket Public Library create community and catalyze social engagement. Leads the day to day partnership activities at the library.
  5. Develops, leads and delivers the library’s outreach strategy and processes with key stakeholders, partners and the Town of Newmarket. 
  6. Oversees and develops the marketing and social media strategies for the library.
  7. Oversees the Makerhub maker space and related programs and services.
  8. Maintains an awareness of developments and emerging trends within the field as it applies to enhancement of library programs and partnerships/relationships.
  9. Prepares monthly reports for the CEO.
  10. Participates in budget preparation and management of assigned budget.
  11. Responsible for hiring, evaluation, training and orientation as required.
  12. Responsible for being the supervisor in charge of the library on a rotating basis with other members of the management staff.  This includes handling complaints, supervising all staff, handling problems with the physical building, locking up on closing, reporting incidents to the C.E.O., and contacting outside services as required to deal with certain occurrences.
  13. All other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental and corporate objectives. 

Credentials Required:

  • Completion of a Library and Information Technician diploma, Marketing Diploma or 3-5 years experience in a library setting or customer service/people-oriented setting, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. 
  • 3-5 years experience managing in a non-profit management, communication or recreation environment.
  • Experience in a unionized environment is an asset.
    • Previous experience in programming, marketing and social media, public speaking, and community engagement are a must.
    • Flexible work week including evenings and weekends will be required
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
    • Project management knowledge is an asset.
    • Driver’s license is an asset.
    • Excellent verbal/ written and interpersonal skills.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, ability to work collaboratively across teams.
    • Proven ability to generate, implement and evaluate new ideas, plans and programs, ability to translate strategic objectives and goals to concrete results and outcomes 
    • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and coordinate.

Hours of work:

35 hours per week with evening and weekend shifts. 

Wages/Benefits:

Grade 8, $69,425 - $86,781
