Newmarket Grows Seed Library

Growing your own food is a great way to eat healthy, save money and protect the environment. Through the Newmarket Grows Seed Library, you can donate and exchange seeds and learn growing strategies through workshops.

Created by the Library in partnership with York Region Food Network, the Seed Library is located on the library's lower level.

Please Note: We cannot promise the seeds will grow. Not all seeds are certified organic.

Borrowing and donating seeds

You don't require a library membership to borrow seeds. All you have to do is visit the Seed Library on the lower level and fill out a check-out form listing the seed packets you are borrowing. You can borrow up to three packets of seeds at one time.

The Seed Library relies on donations. A good way to donate is to save a few seeds at harvest time and place them in packets available at the Seed Library. Write on the packet what type of seeds they are and give the packet to staff at the Adult Services Information Desk. We also accept donations of retail seed packets, and any leftover seeds you may have from these packets.

Tips for growing and saving seeds

To get the most benefit from seed growing, you should be aware of the different types of seeds available. Some of the easier seeds to work with include tomato, beans, lettuce, peas, sunflowers, peppers, beets, chard, and squash (pumpkin, cucumber, etc.).

For seeds that require greater care in cultivation and collection, you may want to do your research first. Check out these online resources for more information:
