As 2022 winds down in December, we’ve got some great programs for you. Step back in time and enjoy our Flashback Movie Week featuring fan favourite films, along with team challenges, snacks and prizes. Learn how to buy and sell items through online markets Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji and VarageSale. York Cinemania continues to show great independent movies with the  award-winning Canadian film Peace By Chocolate. And kids can enjoy a special holiday storytime.

NPL's Flashback Movie Week
Step back in time, long before streaming. Back when, if you missed a movie at the theatre, you could always rent or buy it on VHS videotape…about six months later. Times have changed, but many older films continue to find new audiences. Including the fan favourites we’ve chosen for our movie week. All movies are FREE so drop in and enjoy them in NPL’s multipurpose room. All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Snacks provided, but please bring your own water bottle.

Try our Team Challenge for a chance to win prizes!
During our Flashback Movie Week, watch the movies and then get together family members or friends to participate in NPL’s fun Team Challenge. Pick up an instruction sheet at the Customer Service desk on the main floor, and roam the library to complete fun challenges and activities. Once you’ve completed them all, hand in your completed challenge sheet at Customer Service for a chance to win prizes!

York Cinemania
York Cinemania is back with a new movie every month! Presented by Newmarket Public Library and East Gwillimbury Public Library, York Cinemania brings independent and award-winning TIFF films to audiences in northern York Region showing at SilverCity Cinemas Newmarket. Ticket Prices: $15 per person, per film. Learn more about York Cinemania.

December’s Film: Peace By Chocolate (2021)
Based on a true story. A Syrian refugee family learns to adapt to small-town life in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, opening a shop to continue the family tradition of making fine chocolates. When son Tareq wants to become a doctor, it creates friction between himself and his father, Issam, who wants Tareq to commit himself to the successful family business. A heartfelt and humorous film about duty, desire, and family obligations.

Holiday Storytime at NPL
Come celebrate the holiday season with this special story time.  We will be sharing stories, songs and rhymes about Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and discussing how all these different occasions are celebrated. Registration required.

Chess in the Library
Love playing chess? Want to learn? Here’s your opportunity to play a challenging game with your peers, or learn how to play. Chess in the Library is an organization whose mission is to promote chess across Canada through its student volunteer-run program at libraries. FILM FRIDAYS AT NPL
No registration required, just drop in and enjoy a free movie in the Library’s multipurpose room. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Meditation Park (2017)
Sandra Oh, Cheng Pei Pei and Don McKellar star in the popular Canadian film Meditation Park, a comedy-drama by award-winning writer/director Mina Shum. A devoted wife and mother living in Vancouver finds another woman’s clothing in her husband’s laundry, forcing her to reassess her outlook on life. Drop in and enjoy this entertaining film. BOOK CLUBS:
 

NPL’s Online Cookbook Club
Let’s get cooking! Here’s a club for those who enjoy the culinary arts. We’ll make different dishes each month based on a theme, with suggested recipe books to use that are available at NPL (or use a recipe source of your own). At our monthly online meetings, we’ll show each other the dish we’ve created (this can be a photo if it’s already been consumed), and chat about food, recipes and more.

December’s Theme: Entertaining with Boards and Fast Desserts
Get some great entertaining ideas for the holidays. Charcuterie boards have evolved into so many creative and tasty ideas and who doesn’t need a fast and easy dessert to prepare over the holidays. Share virtually with photos of your culinary creations. Here are some books for inspiration: in print at the library Around The Board by Emily Delaney; and on Hoopla, Beautiful Boards by Maegan Brown. Feel free to use any recipe source.

Looking to clear out clutter from your home? Learn how to buy and sell items you no longer need through online markets. We’ll show you how to save money and make money using Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji and VarageSale. These online markets are a great way to buy locally, sell locally and prevent items from ending up in the landfill. Register now and enjoy the benefits of taking your garage sale virtual.

Employment Insurance and Benefits with Service Canada
Learn from a Service Canada representative all about Employment Insurance, including the types of Employment Insurance Benefits, eligibility, as well as how to apply. There will be a question and answer period as well as a live demonstration of the Canada.ca website, including electronic resources discussed during the session.
