Hot events for the cooler weather at NPL!
We’ve got a great lineup of events in November. If you’re looking for expert writing advice and tips, author Kim McDougall has a workshop on the difference between showing or telling when writing. Indigenous painter Moses Lunham will be conducting an online painting class, walking participants step-by-step through the process of creating beautiful artwork. For children 10 to 12 the library’s STEAM workshops provide hands-on instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. York Cinemania continues to show great independent movies with the award-winning Canadian film Scarborough. Kids can enjoy the P.A. Day movie Tom and Jerry, and the Canada Revenue Agency will discuss how to beware of fraud in Slam the Scam. All this and so much more this month at NPL!

York Cinemania
York Cinemania is back with a new movie every month! Presented by Newmarket Public Library and East Gwillimbury Public Library, York Cinemania brings independent and award-winning TIFF films to audiences in northern York Region showing at SilverCity Cinemas Newmarket. November’s Film: Scarborough (2021)
The runner up for TIFF’s People’s Choice Award and winner of eight Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. This adaptation of Catherine Hernandez’s novel follows three children over the course of one school year. With amazing performances from its young cast, the film depicts how the three kids from a low-income neighbourhood find friendship and community in the suburbs.

WRITING WORKSHOP:
The Showing/Telling Dilemma Writer Workshop with Kim McDougall
“Show don’t tell” is an often-heard mantra in writing. But how can you tell the difference? And how do you transform “telling” into “showing?” Finally, when is it okay to “tell?” Author Kim McDougall of the Writer’s Community of York Region will explore these important questions, by looking at dialogue, description, pacing and transitions, so you’ll learn to spot and fix the problem passages in your manuscript.

This drama looks at the formative years of author J. R. R. Tolkien, who as an orphan finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. NPL’s Online Cookbook Club
Let’s get cooking! Here’s a club for those who enjoy the culinary arts. We’ll make different dishes each month based on a theme, with suggested recipe books to use that are available at NPL (or use a recipe source of your own). At our monthly online meetings we’ll show each other the dish we’ve created (this can be a photo if it’s already been consumed), and chat about food, recipes and more.

Indigenous Paint Night with Moses Lunham
Indigenous artist Moses Lunham will share a short story about what inspired him to create his painting Falling Leaves Moon. He will touch on how his art work is a reflection of his people's spirituality and ideology. Then Moses will guide participants as they paint along with him step-by-step, using their own materials. Let’s Talk: Barriers in Cross-Cultural Communication
This interactive workshop will aim at educating and highlighting challenges that come with cross-cultural dialogue.
