Reading Buddies is a literacy-based program that fosters a love of reading in young children as well as giving teen/adult volunteers the opportunity to share in the adventure. Throughout this 10-week program, buddies and mentors meet for 1 hour each week and read interesting stories and play fun literacy-based games. This is a program for children (grades 1-4) and teens/adults (minimum grade 9).
Fall 2013 Session: Tuesday, September 10 through to Saturday, November 16, 2013
Application Deadline: Tuesday, August 20, 2013
(The program coordinator will contact you after the deadline to follow up on your application.)
How to Apply: Please complete an application form (avail. below) and email it to canderson@newmarketpl.ca or drop it off at the information desk in the Chidlren's Department. (Pre-printed forms are also available.)
Buddy (Child)
Reading Buddies is designed to help children (grades 1-4) who would benefit from some reading encouragement. Children will meet with a volunteer once a week for a 1-hour session where they will read together for pleasure and enjoy activities that promote reading and writing.

Mentor (Volunteer)
Reading Buddies is a great opportunity to earn some community volunteer hours or to simply share a love of reading with young children. Volunteers must be minimum 14-years old and submit an application form. If they are successfully matched with a child, they will be called for an interview and asked to submit a vulnerable sector screening form (available during the interview and reimbursed by the library when returned with a receipt).
We try our best to match for all applicants, but sometimes opportunities are limited and we regret we may not find matches for everyone immediately. If we cannot match a mentor or buddy, we keep their application on file for possible matches with future Reading Buddies sessions.
