Genealogical Research

Newmarket Public Library has a variety of material to help you in your genealogy research. The collection consists of books, microfilm, and online databases.

If the library does not have specific books or microfilm, materials held at both the national and provincial archives are available through InterLoan interlibrary loan.

The most recent initiative is the digitization of the Era-Banner. Staff are working to update this collection and more material is continually being uploaded to the Our Ontario website. You can now browse through back issues of the paper in the comfort of your own home. The collection is also indexed.

The library makes available microfilmed copies of Newmarket newspapers from 1852 until the present. We provide public access to several microfilm readers and digital microfilm scanners.

The genealogy collection is housed on the lower level of the library. Ask one of the friendly staff at the Adult Information desk to assist you if you are not sure where to start.
